About Kochi

Kochi, the commercial and judicial nerve centre of Kerala, plays a pivotal role in the legal and corporate landscape of the state. Strategically located on the southwest coast of India, it is a hub of commercial, maritime, and infrastructural development. For a law firm, establishing or maintaining a presence in Kochi is not merely advantageous but increasingly essential for broad-based practice and service delivery.  Kochi is home to the Hon’ble High Court of Kerala, which exercises jurisdiction over the entire state and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. This makes it the principal appellate authority in the region and the seat of constitutional and administrative law matters. In addition, Kochi houses key benches of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT), Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, and Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). This concentration of judicial and quasi-judicial bodies enables law firms to effectively manage litigation and regulatory proceedings across diverse practice areas such as company law, insolvency, taxation, banking, and consumer protection. Kochi is also the administrative base for various important regulatory authorities including the Registrar of Companies (ROC), Goods and Services Tax (GST) Commissionerate, Enforcement Directorate (ED), Customs Department, SEBI regional office, and the Marine Mercantile Department. As the commercial capital of Kerala, Kochi hosts a wide spectrum of businesses—ranging from large shipping and logistics corporations to technology startups, real estate developers, infrastructure giants, healthcare institutions, hospitality chains, and manufacturing units. The city also has multiple Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and hosts major projects like Infopark and SmartCity. With the upcoming international-scale infrastructure like the Vizhinjam Port and expansion of metro and logistic corridors, Kochi is poised to become a key gateway for international trade.   Given its historic and strategic port, Kochi is uniquely positioned in the realm of maritime law and admiralty litigation. The presence of the Cochin Port Trust, Indian Coast Guard, Customs, and marine shipping companies creates a niche but significant legal practice area involving ship arrest, cargo claims, marine insurance, and port regulations. With the rise in commercial disputes, Kochi has seen an increase in institutional and ad hoc arbitration. The city offers a conducive legal environment for arbitration, mediation, and conciliation.
